Another question for knitters: When casting on what side should the extra yarn be on?

I’ve made my first row of cast on stitches. I’m confused as to what side of the needle the extra yarn (the one NOT connected to the yarn ball) should be on.

Right now, I am holding the needle in my left hand and the extra piece of yarn ends on the pointed tip (right part of needle)

I am learning to knit the continental way.

Thanks!

Knitters: Do you know the names for these stitch patterns?

When you knit the entire row (RS) and then go back and purl the entire row (WS)–basically knitting?

Also, what is the pattern for the stockinette stitch? * k1, p1, repeat from *? Or what?
Yes, sometimes I think that the patterns do deserve some colorful names, but unfortunately they don’t use my terms in the pattern books.

What are some beginner projects for knitters?

I know how to knit and purl. I mean I’ve made scarves and hats before.. but I would like to follow a pattern that’s basically a fail-safe project lol.
