when I am knitting and purling on the same row is it better to switch my yarn to the other side before or after I slide the marker?

I’m try to knit something for a friend but I’m having a difficult time purling and knitting in the same row. If it makes any difference I’m using size 8 wood needles, and worsted weight wool yarn. Thanks!
