So I am a continental knitter and was taught the method of Norwegian Purling from my Danish Grandmother. It makes doing rib or seed stitch a breeze, especially when you do not have to bring the working yarn in the front of your work! hello..how did you do your cable stitch..?
I knit continental as well and when I purl I put in in front, but I kind of found a really easy way to purl without having to stop and move every thing with both hands.. I dunno. I did a huge practice piece with cheap yarn and in it I did basketweave, so I guess all that repetition let me find a way that worked well for my hands.
this is a beautiful scarf, and i went to your site for the pattern. my question to you is how do you do the cables without a cable needle?
Thanks, this was very helpful.
This is exactly how a Finnish woman taught me to purl over 25 years ago!
That scarf looks amazing! I am definitely going to try this technique. Thanks.
@Hsailormoon
Thanks!! i actually think of it as “if i were to pretned to stab myself in the eye with my needle, and wrap the yarn around, it woul dbe COuNTER clockwise around the needle, LOL, so i was nervous again that i was doing it wrong!! but ya, your note means the exact same thing,, spinning your NEEDLE clockwise = a counter clockwise wrap… PHEW, i am doin ok, LOL Going from eastern to western knitting was really confusing for me (different wrap is key) Thanks again!!
Thanks, I put a correction to the video.
@j8nnyl You know what, you are absolutely right. I didn’t realize that till you mentioned it, that I said that. I was actually quite nervous in the beginning of the video, where I can slightly hear my voice shake. lol
You are right, (I just had to pick up my knitting to figure it out), You want to wrap the yarn, by moving the needle clockwise around the working yarn.
Thank you.
Me again… i have a question – at one point you say you can wrap either way (or pick up either way?) but doenst it make a difference which way you wrap? I know that one way is eastern and one way is western, so i am confused that you say it can be either way.
Thanks again!!! I actually bought some Vanna Olive cuz i love it so much in your video.
)
I am sure i commented before, but i just have to say again, thank you, this is an awesome video. As a gir I started out eastern european style knitting, (continental of course) and then switched to western continental,. W.C. Purling is So SLOW!! so i LOVE doing the norw. purl, which i learned mostly from your vid. I stopped back just to be sure i was doing it OK
)
i know i need to do the tug, my purls are so loose! and my knits are so tight – i need to work on that
Anyway, THANKS so much!
interesting. amazing. i may have to force myself to knit continental so i can benefit from this nifty technique!! plus my husband is norwegian so anything i can do to honour that is exciting.
Thank you so much!!!! This is so much quicker than purling continental style.
Thank you so much
Thank You – Takk! =D Now I will survive the k1 p1 ribbing on the bottom of my jumper.
This is so awsome. Makes hand knitting so much easier if you have stiffer fingers from arthritis. Thank you again for clearly showing this technique.
This is so good! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Thank you!! Very helpful…
Awesome and very easy to understand! I’m a new knitter, who knits continental. And, I tell ya, doing a k2 p2 ribbing is a royal pain in the butt. This will make it so much easier! Thanks!
I am new to knitting and the lady at the yarn store showed me how to do this but I forgot. I searched you tube until I found you. Thank You soooo much.
Magic – how you can make it, that the
pattern on front and back look the same?
Thanks! So much faster than my regular style of purling!
Hello. I was wondering if purling this way can work for people that knit english style?
Fantastic video, thanks!!! I have been able to do this purl, from your instruction, however i am working on a raspberry stitch pattern, where I must k,p,k into 1 stitch. i cant seem to accomoplish this with the norwegian purl! Have you? In any case, thanks so much for sharing your technique!.
What’s the name of the scarf pattern again?
