Hello knitters! This video is designed to give you lots of clear and helpful information regarding the ‘rib cable cast on’ method, also referred to as the ‘alternate cable cast on’ method. It is used as an edging for rib fabrics and forms a somewhat ‘invisible’ cast on edge that blends perfectly with the rib texture. For more knitting and crochet vidoes, please check out my channel, and for all things knitting and crochet, visit fastfallingfeathers.blogspot.com Find me on Ravelry as ‘elsteffo’. Happy knitting!

Excellent instruction! If I hadn’t done so much already, I’d redo my current project this way.
no, because as you see at the end of the video, you start at the other end of the row so the set up loop is a purl at the end of the row. And even if you’re knitting in the round, if you end on an even number, which will be a knit stitch, it will connect to the set-up loop and still be knit purl knit.
Great tutorial! Thanks!
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO CASTS ON LIKE ME
everyone does that hand thing and i dont like it.
XD
One problem:surely the set-up loop counts as the first knit stitch, so wouldnt it be better to start with the purl cast on stitch, otherwise it will look like k2 p1 k1 p1 etc and will messup th 2nd row?
Skizzet21 you would just instead of casting on one as if to knit, the one as if to purl, make it cast on one as if to knit (because the first,’set-up’ loop counts as the fist knit stitch), then cast on 2 as if to purl, the 2 as if to knit and so on.
OK
Have just cast on,as i just said, one as if to knit, the next as if to purl, and it has turned out thee same as yours, with some stitches kinda slated etc.
It would have been much much clearer had you simply said instead of casting on all stitches as if to knit, cast every other one as if to purl, instead of all this ‘go between the two stitches’ malarkey, with a back view which confuses even more.
Having said that it does look a lot neater
Thanks
when you sy go between the two stitches for the second cast on stitch, how? in actual fact do you mean put the needle through the stitch you just cast on as if you are going to purl?Thats the only way i can see of going betwween the stitches and actually being able to cast it on.
I love your video but I have a request, can you show us how to do a p2 k2 cast on, pretty please?
wow! do you know any other patterns that we could do?
Thank you for a great and easy to understand tutorial. Plus I could listen to your voice all day, very soothing.
how do you do a two ribbing pattern? for example instead of knit one purl one, how do you start knit 2 purl 2?
Sure, most cast on methods will be fine for ribbing. The advantage of using this cast on method with ribbing is that the cast on edge is somewhat camouflaged.
This is the best and clearest cast on for rib that I have found. I hope you have other videos! Thank you elsteffo
i meant could u do start with a rib stich without casting on this way
ty
Not at all! This is just one of the many cast on methods available. This particular cast on is used for the beginning of ribbed fabrics.
do u have to cast on this way?
you ended kind of fast, and the begining was somewhat confusing. i understood just a bit. thank you anyways.
Thank you! How easy and smart!
Great tutorial and I can now do a lovely cast on for socks – thank you!
its too fast, i’m beginner hehehe
Hi there, thanks for your question. I’m not quite sure what you mean, so I’ll take a guess that you would like to know how to make the next row of knitting, which moves the stitches from the left-hand needle to the right-hand one. I have some videos about making the knit stitch and the purl stitch that you can have a look at for some more help. If you still don’t find what you’re looking for, then please write again and I’ll do my best to help. Happy knitting!
how are u getting those on the right hand needle?
Brilliant. I’ve been knitting for years and was just about to start beanie hat no. 6 for my teenage son when I came across this site. I’m already on round 4, casting on couldn’t have been easier, and it’s by FAR the neatest edge to any of the hats I’ve knitted. Now the others are going to look poor compared to this one … I only watched it once and picked it up straight away, but I have been knitting for years. Many thanks, will never cast on rib in any other way now!
