I am trying to learn to crochet, but I have noticed when I got to the local yarn store or when I have looked into joining clubs, it all seems to be about knitting. True, they have some crochet patterns or a few crocheters in the group…but it does not nearly seem to have the same popularity, appeal, or respect as knitting. Why?

I believe it is because the Stitch and Bitch book by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee was first about knitting and had projects to appeal to the more modern crafter.
I have no idea, but I do both and find crocheting goes faster and I like it better.
It’s a lot like the rap wars of the 1990′s.
Beverly Blat was shot and killed in August of 2007 by member of a knitting gang. Blat was the Mother of Crochet on the West Coast.
IMO, knitting allows a greater variety of stitch textures than crochet, so it is more flexible than crochet in terms of what can be achieved. Also, knitting can be done by machine, so we’re used to seeing more knitted items available for sale. Not to say some terrific things aren’t made using crochet. I know both techniques, and I tend to knit more than crochet, but I do think crochet is easier to learn.
