Knitting used to only be popular with elderly women as it was relaxing and didn’t take much energy. Now knitting is popular with almost everyone for the same reasons. People shouldn’t tease you because you knit. They don’t know what they’re missing out on.
Because knitting used to be a very important skill for pioneer women and such, so people often assosiate grandmas with knitting, which is saying that they are so old, they still think knitting is a needed skill today.
Know it is popular with many teens. It mostly calms their nerves, and gives them something to get their mind off other things like maybe bitting your nails. It helps to learn how to make things with yarn instead of buying everything! It’s not. Just ignore them.
I’ve actually seen at Hobby Lobby a knitting set for younger girls. It had really cool designer yarn, and a dvd teaching you how to knit. I thought it was pretty cool and thought about it as a gift for my niece.
uh my cute hotty wife made me some socks..its like when dudes know how to cook…know what i mean
I think people think knitting is for grannies because that is their only frame of reference. Perhaps their own granny knitted or crocheted (as did mine) but they haven’t seen others actively engaged in knitting and creating modern, beautiful items.
Nowadays, the reality is that all types of people – backgrounds, races, genders, ages – engage in fiber arts in one way or another…and the more Knitting media can showcase the diversity of those who knit, the quicker this stereotype about “knitting is for grannies” can be subdued.
