Here are some links to websites with instructions and pictures. I dont know about you, but pictures help me out a lot. Good luck!
You Tube has some really great videos on learning to cast on, do the knit stitch, do the purl stitch, then go more advanced.
Check these out:

Knitting is pretty easy to learn, it just takes a few tries to get it right. Be sure to practice first on some practice yarn. I also like using Knittinghelp.com. Here is a reply I used before:
You want to cast on first. Try with 20 stitches or so and practice from there. Follow this link and view the techniques given and practice viewing the video and pausing so you can follow along. There are two ways to knit, and it differs in the way you hold the yarn in your hand. There is Continental and English style. Knittinghelp.com shows both methods here so you can see what works best for you when demonstrating in their videos.
To begin, you “cast on” the amount of stitches you need. I would cast on 20 to start with and practice with those.

Once you have cast on the amount of stitches you want, view these videos to begin knitting: http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/knit-...
View each method shown (Continental and English) and try both and see what you like and what feels good for you. Again, follow along and pause when needed. Start with the needle with stitches in your left hand and then they will be knit onto the right needle.
When you have knit the entire needle, the stitches will now be on the right needle. To do another row, switch needles. Put the empty needle in your right hand and the one with the stitches in your left. Begin again.
Now you are knitting. Doing this stitch, will create the “garter stitch”: http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/knitt...
Knitting consists of two stitches, knit and purl. When you knit one row, purl the next row, you will create the “stockinette stitch.” You can also just purl and entire piece. I would practice just the knit stitch first until you really know it. When you do, begin with the purl stitch.
When you are finished knitting, you will need to cast off. Casting off binds your work so that it does not unravel. Here are two videos to show how to do that:

So, very simple: cast on, knit, cast off. The knitting is basically two stitches, knit and purl. Combining the two creates different looks, etc.
Good luck! I hope I helped some.
