I’m just starting knitting, and my instructor told me to get a size 4 or 5 knitting needle. What size yarn would I get for that? I’m just starting out with a scarf. What would you recommend?
Yarn has a paper band round it which gives the needle size best suited to that yarn.
So check the band on a yarn you like and see if it gives size 5. For a scarf size isn’t that important so if the band says size 4 or 6 you could use that.
It depends on the look you want. A lighter weight yarn will give you a lacey look while a larger yarn will be more solid. Since you are a beginner, a sport weight (size 3) would probably be best, not too lacey, not too tight. But ask your instructor to be sure. Actually, I’m surprised she/he didn’t tell you which yarn weight to purchase…
