I wouldn’t use yarn get a some crochet cotton so that you can get a good tight knit that wont sag and stetch when you don’t want it to.
I agree with the first answer – NOTHING that stretches when it gets wet. Cotton is an excellent choice, and the smaller the yarn/thread, the less of a problem you’ll have with things poking through that you’d rather didn’t (or else you can line it with light-weight cotton fabric). ‘Knit-cro-sheen’ or ‘speed-cro-sheen’ weight thread was the preferred weight for bikinis back in the 60′s and 70′s.
Cream, beige, or pastels are good colors to go for – white can turn yellow in chlorine or mottled brown in lake water, and bright/deep colors can fade rapidly in chlorine.
Good luck!
i suggest a synthetic like acrylic that has elastic in it that can be bleached since that is what chlorine is.
here is a link that has some yarns that you can choose from that has elastic build into the yarn.

A cotton would be best, for holding its shape. Be careful it’s rinsed thoroughly afterwards though, as any chlorine or chemicals from the water may start to rot the yarn in time.
http://www.ravelry.com has lots of listings for shops and patterns. You have to join, but it’s free, and really big in the knitting/crochet community.
Well normal tricot swimsuits are usually made of Nylon or Polyester/Spandex blends because those materials hold up better in water and allow for stretch. I feel like cotton will discolor easily.
