knit 1, purl 1, k1, p1, and so on
the second round repeat the same
and on the next two rounds (3rd and 4th) you do the opposite: p1, k1
then for the 5th and 6th you switch again
what is the name for this pattern, i was wondering?
That would make a rib stitch if you kept doing k1, p1. However, if you reverse it after a couple of rows, I bet it would look like the stitches are weaving over and under each other.

It is one version of the Moss Stitch
This is the basket weave stitch. Usually you do it in squares but you can do it this way also
