Is a video available if you have no one to teach you in person? Is it more difficult to learn if a person is left handed? When I use a pair of scissors though, I cut right handed so I’m not sure how I would know which hand would do what in knitting or crocheting. Is knitting or crocheting easier for beginners? Sorry for so many questions, but I am curious in case I decided to take up the craft one day.

First, I’m left handed. I knit right handed and I crochet left handed. I learned from books over 50 years ago. I’ve seen in several stores, including WalMart, kits that teach you to either knit or crochet. Also, I’ve seen specialty yarn shops that give lessons. If you have a person teach you, and you are going to do the crafts left handed, sit across from them. Then you have a mirror image of what you should do.
Both knitting and crocheting are great hobbies. I crochet to relax and when I’m mad or upset, I knit up a storm.
Good luck and enjoy.
Knitting is done with knitting needles, and crocheting is done with a crochet hook. I would say that knitting is easier. My grandmother used to crochet, but she never knitted. There is also tatting. I think, as a rule knitting is using a larger medium (yarn) than crocheting. Personally, I think I will stick with embroidering. That is really easy, and I can do it.
I don’t know how easy it is for a lefty to learn to crochet or knit. Knitting involves two needles, crochet one hook. There are different sizes of both, and it is less expensive to go buy a hook. If you drop a stitch knitting, you can pick it up without having to unravel back to the mistake. If you drop a stitch in crocheting, tough luck, you have to pull the yarn out to the mistake and fix it. I don’t know if there any videos, when I was in fifth-grade I took lessons at a yarn store in a shopping mall, I was the only child and got my yarn tangled on a daily basis. Most were young women wanting to make baby clothes and sweaters. It is better to have someone show you how to hold the yarn and watch to see if you are pulling it too tight, it will warp whatever you are working on if your tension isn’t consistent. I like crocheting better, can experiment with different stitches to make my own patterns for flat items like baby blankets and muffler scarves, only need one hook instead of two long needles.
I think it is easier to crochet than knit. I’m not very skilled at either but I can crochet dishcloths with cotton yarn. The knitting needles were harder to manipulate and I was always dropping stitches. I gave up before long. One of my grandmothers taught me how to crochet and tried to teach me how to knit. I would suggest that you find a beginners class in your community. The Hobby Lobby stores in my part of the USA offer beginner classes.
Some craft and fabric stores will occassionally give free lessons or hold classes for those who want to learn to knit or crochet. Yarn stores also have classes. It can be a little tricky for a left and right hand combination to be student and teacher, but it can be done. It helps if your teacher uses the same side that you use. You might be able to find a video. There are many many books with photos, but a live person, with lots of patience is the best teacher. There are groups who meet at books stores or churches to make blankets and things for charities and they would gladly show you what to do. One of those groups is HAP who make 6x 9 rectangles and get together every few months to put them together for afghans for wounded soldiers. They would love to have your help.
The difference is that knitting is usually done with two needles, one held in each hand. Sometimes four needles are used or one circular needle to make round garments or objects. Crocheting uses one single hook and is held in one hand. Knitting and crochet look different when they are finished. There are a couple of good websites that will show the difference. They are:
http://www.knittinghelp.com and http://www.crochethelp.com
If you are interested in learning either knitting or crocheting, a good yarn shop can teach you how. It is best to learn it “hands on” rather than out of a book or from a video. An experienced teacher can teach you how to do it left-handed. Both are equally easy for beginners.
It all depends on what interests you and how you learn. One mistake many people make is assuming that just because crochet uses one hook, it must be easier. The difficulty lies not in how many hooks or needles one uses, but in the projects themselves. This is why you need a good teacher. Some people take more easily to knitting, others to crochet.
I speak from experience.
The apparatuses you use mostly. The product is similar. Knitting is tighter.
…to me there’s no difference because I’m apparently genetically incapable of doing either (and I’ve had lessons in both!).
Basically, knitting is a two-needle craft and crocheting requires only one needle (hook).
Crochet is done with one hook, and the yarn or thread being held in the other hand. I find it easy, as there are only a few basic stitches, and you can quickly make something.
Knitting is done with 2 needles, generally with stoppers at one end and pointed tips on the business end of things.
I am left handed. I used to sit directly in front of Mom, and made my needles go in the exact same direction as I saw hers move.
There are handicraft books out which explain these things. I like the ones with the illustrations, to make it easier.
