My suggestion for you is Wool-Ease by Lion Brand. It has enough wool to be warm and soft and enough acrylic to not be itchy and be able to be machine washed and dried. It comes in tons of colors and just about any place that carries yarn has it, and at a good price. The best of all knitting worlds.
Don’t use Super Saver, it’s too stiff and itchy. If you swear by Red Heart, try their Eco-Ways or Bamboo Wool. I swear by Wool-Ease by Lion Brand, but that’s just me. Use whatever you love the feel of, as hats are so close to your face, that you really do need to choose something some and warm.
If you want a nice hat that is warm I would go for a nice classic Merino wool such as SPINRITE-Paton’s Classic Merino Wool. A soft yarn for fabulous resilient knit. Gorgeous color palette! Great range of stepping shades in the latest color trends: rich and modern. Weight category: 4; 3.5oz/100g; 223yd/204m; 100% merino wool. Suggested knitting needles: 7/4.5mm

Wool is the warmest.
Here is a link with examples of wool and blends.

IF you are willing to hand wash the hat in cold water then Paton’s Classic Wool
IF you want to be able to toss the hat in the washer and dryer then Woolease which is 20% wool and 80% acrylic
You can find both at JoAnn’s Fabrics and Crafts. I have worked with both and love them.
