It depends on which particular Rowan yarn you’re looking to substitute. I use the yarn database at Ravelry ( – free sign up). Look up the yarn that is recommended for the pattern. It will give you the properties of the yarn (which fibre types, the yarn gauge, whether it’s a plied or single yarn, et cetera). Then you can look for yarns that have those properties in the database and find a reasonable substitute.
For instance, Rowan Felted Aran could be substituted with Berroco Blackstone Tweed, or half a dozen other brands.
Without knowing what yarn is suggested, you won’t be able to get a good suggestion for a substitute.
From my previous answer, apparently Ravelry.com was edited out. That’s not very helpful for you! Anyway, Ravelry.com and once you have an account, you can use the yarn tab.

Check out LionBrandYarn.Com
They have nice yarns and may be a little cheaper depending on the type of yarn you want.
They also have free patterns for knitting…you do have to register to get free patterns but registration is free.
