In my pattern I’m told to K2, p2tog across – 42 sts.
I know what K2 and p2tog are, but I’m curious as to what p2tog across would refer to.
The pattern up to that point reads:
With color A, cast on 56 stitches.
Rows 1-11: *K2, p2. Repeat from * to end of row.
Row 12 K2, p2tog across – 42 sts
then
Rows 13-20 Work in St st, beg with a RS row.
Thank you so much – so much easier to do now that I understand it!

You K2, then you P2Tog. Then you K2, then you P2Tog. You keep repeating this pattern all the way ACROSS the row, till you get to the other end.
So now for every 4 stitches you used to have, you now have 3.
You’ve reduced the number of stitches on your needle by 1/4, from 56 to 42.
It means to go across the entire row using that pattern. So you would k2, p2tog, k2, p2tog, etc until you reach the end of the row.
The pattern is written in a confusing manner, so think of it like it’s written for rows 1-11.
*k2, p2tog* repeat from * to end of row.
