i’m kind of a beginning knitter, and my boyfriend asked me to knit him a scarf. i’d love to be able to finish it for valentine’s day, which is three days away. thankfully he found a pattern he really liked, and it only included knit and purl stitches, both of which i can definitely handle. but for every odd row you’re supposed to “Knit the knit sts and purl the purl sts as they face you.” does that just mean to repeat the row before? i’m completely confused and running out of time! please help!

yep, you got it … just repeat what you’ve already done on the row below
happy knitting!
It doesn’t necessarily mean that you repeat the row but you might …
Here you go … turn your work so you’re ready for the new row. Some of your sts will be “knits” … the smooth, v-shaped ones, and some will be “purls” … the bump is up close to the needle.
Also, double check … if you ended with a “purl 4″ and then turned your work, you should now see 4 knits (because a knit is the backside of a purl) at the beginning of your row. Knit those knits, purl the purls. Great things will happen.
yeah you knit the the knits and purl the purls
It actually almost means the opposite of what you’re saying. You need to do the stitches “as they face you” The back of a knit stitch looks like a purl, and the back of the purl looks like a knit. SO for example, if you knit the entire row 1, then for row 2 you would purl the entire row as they appear as purl stitches when you turn it over. If you purled row 1, then row 2 will be knit, etc. You want the stitch that you are making on these rows to look exactly like the stitch below it…so if it’s a V –you knit, if it’s a bump — you purl.
KKKPPPKKK (row 1)
PPPKKKPPP (row 2)
I hope that I’ve reworded that in enough ways to make sense and that you can get it done in time for V-day.
Good luck!
