http://www.knittingdaily.com has lots of excellent patterns to challange the mind. Instructions are very clear. Free site, requires registration for downloading patterns and posting on the forum, Patterns are in .pdf so download is easy, printing is even easier.

check http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com and http://www.ravelry.com for free easy patterns. also go to http://www.knittinghelp.com to learn how to do other stitches. Now that you have hats and scarves under your belt, challenge yourself a bit. Don’t worry too much about messing up, it helps understand how patterns work and how to fix your mistakes. Eventually you will start designing your own stuff!

Sirima is absolutely right, find a *learn to knit* afghan pattern (Leisure Arts has one and Barbara Walker has written the *Learn To Knit Afghan Book* which is still in print). Not only will you expand your knowledge base with one of these, you’ll end up with a far more useful item than another scarf. Another option would be to find one of the stitch treasuries (again, Walker has written the definitive ones) and knit a bunch of mug rugs (coasters) in different stitch patterns to learn them.

Buy many wools many color, knit square pieces, join them to make blanket, if you arrange colors nicely you will have beautiful blanket/bed cover, never fail. Good luck
