Purl is a type of stitch: when the needle enters the front of the stitch from right to left and the yarn is cast over the needle from back to front. It is the opposite of knit.
Purling is the action of making a purl stitch, whether just once or repetitively. So basically, purling describes the stitch, not the resulting pattern.
Basic knitting patterns include the garter stitch, stockinette, reverse stockinette, seed stitch, and rib stitch. If you are looking for a “stitching pattern” rather than a “stitch,” I recommend wiki for more information/pictures on the patterns listed above.
Huh? You used the word “purl” several different ways in your question, making it hard to answer directly.
There are two basic stitches in knitting. One is the knit stitch, the other is the purl stitch. In the language in which I learned to knit, the words for knit and purl translate to front stitch and back stitch. Purl is the stitch done from the back of the item to make a knit stitch appear on the front of it when you’re working the most common stitch, stockinette.
When most people say “I’m purling” they mean a whole whack of purl stitches, maybe even a whole row, not alternating knit and purl stitches. When you’re alternating, it’s often for ribbing, You can do k1p1 rib, k2p2 rib, k1p2 rib, or k2p1 rib — and so on. The seed or moss stitch is also done by alternating.
You should check out the instructional videos at
http://www.knittinghelp.com
They will show you how to cast on, knit, purl, increase, and decrease.
If you knit every stitch of every row that is garter stitch
If you knit all of the odd numbered rows and purl all the evens that is stockinette stitch.
If you alternate knitting and purling it will either be ribbing or seed stitch
