My stitches are nice and even all across rows. But when I get to the last stitch, whether knit or purl, it always is very loose. Anyway to avoid that?

make sure you tighten it – not too tight – but then when you make the new row – you should be able to tighten it more. Seems to work for me -
Ok here’s what to do – always SLIP the FIRST stitch of every row!! Then when you come to the LAST stitch, it will always be nice and firm – and another trick – if the row is knit, then slip the FIRST STITCH purlways with the yarn in front, then take theyarn to the back and knit the rest of the row. If the row is purl, slip the FIRST STITCH knit ways with the yarn at the back, and then bring the yarn to the front and purl the rest of the row. This will give you a nice firm chain edge too – what a bonus!
Hope this helps.
You can slip the stitch as the last poster suggested, but my preference is to just tighten the stitch a little.
After you turn your work, pull down and tighten the yarn as you are knitting the first stitch and this will tighten the previous stitch which in this case is the last stitch of the previous row.
I hope this make sense to you…just hold your yarn a little more firmly as you start the row and you should be fine.
Here’s a video which shows some ways to keep this from happening

Happy knitting
What I do is knit in the purl or purl in the knit of the last stitch and tug a tiny bit on the thread.
just knit that stitch a little tighter then the others like wrapping the yarn around your needle tighter or give your yarn an extra tug.
whenyou turn your work pull the first stitch tighter
Ok, knit the last stitch on the row, or purl or whatever the pattern says. Turn your work and place the needle in the loop to form the fist stitch (again knit, purl or whatever) while the needle tip is in the loop give the yarn a bit of a tug it’ll tighten the previous stitch. This is great when working in the round to prevent ladders as well.
