One thing you’ll want to learn is increasing and decreasing. Once you can do knit, purl, increase, and decrease, you can make almost anything you want. At the moment, you can make anything that’s straight. How about a throw-pillow cover? Cast on enough to make the right width and go from there. Use different combinations of knit and purl to make it pretty. Play with going from a k1p1 rib to a k2p2 rib to a k3p3 rib and back down again. Do three or four rows of each one. It makes a cool pattern. You can also make a scarf. Be sure NOT to use st st (knit one row, purl one row, repeat) for this. It curls awfully when you don’t sew it to something, like with a scarf. Use ribbing or seed stitch or garter stitch or anything except stockinette stitch. The alternating rib would be fun for a scarf.
another fun variation on knit 1, purl 1, is the popcorn stitch – you knit 1, purl 1 all across the row, then on the next row, instead of making a ribbing, (purling the knit stitches, and knitting the purl stitches), do the opposite – - purl the purl stitch, and knit the knit stitch. It gives it a bumpy pattern, but it’s different, and is nice for the face of a pillow, or even a scarf.
Have you tried cable stitches? they are not difficult, but you need a double-pointed needle for it – you take a number of stitches onto the dpn (double pointed needle), and hold it in front or back of your work, then knit stitches from your “working” needle, and THEN pick up the stitches from the dpn. You always work the cable on the front side of your work, then purl them across on the reverse row.

good luck, and have fun – knitting is so relaxing, and fun – it’s very portable, and if you do it while riding the bus or something, it can sometimes open up the most interesting conversations with people!
