knitting needles, and yarn, (:
start out with cheapo yarn, and once you get really good at it, you can use the nice stuff. that’s what i would do !
beleive me
(from experience)
DO NOT START WITH TOO CHEAP OF YARN or FUZZY YARN
i have been knitting and crocheting for almost 7 years now and i still cant find my way around projects with fuzzy yarn
also decide what project you want to do then get the right size of knitting needles
DO NOT GET THE KNITTING NEEDLES FIRST
You’re going to need yarn and of course knitting needles..and for hats..theres a special kind of needle thing you can use.
Heres a book you can try..

I reccomend starting out with any kind of beginners book.
First find a pattern you like..and check for what experience level it requires..next type of yarn to use for the pattern or acceptable substitutes..then buy the needles it says would be best..for most hat patterns you do not need special needles, but for some you might need circular needles. I also suggest for a start do not try the fuzzy or eyelash yarns. At Hobby Lobby you can find many patterns for free on the yarn isles. Oh and if you like you can get one of the circular looms and it practically does all the work for you!! Good luck!!
