I make these afghans for charity. I want to know the weight of the yarn so I can substitue if I need to. And some yarns are no longer made.

A little more info please. You’re telling us almost nothing with what you wrote.
Most baby afghan patterns I’ve seen were made of baby weight yarns. If you are looking for a substitute, find a very soft, very light weight yarn. For the adult lap robes, use anything that is not too heavy, that you find on sale.

you need to take a cut of the original yarn to a store and compare the sizes, also you can sometimes judge the size by the hook size or needle size it reccomends you use for the pattern.
You can look up the yarns called for on the company’s website and see what gauge the yarn works to and substitute a yarn that will give you the same gauge. It should also tell you approximately what weight the yarn is that you are substituting for.
