It’s at that URL. I’ve really never done anything other than knit or purl and have never done a cable before. Are there some basic things I should practice before trying to knit this pattern?
Knit and Purl. That’s 99% of your job as a knitter. I would recommend that you do some swatches of lace and of cables before you get down to the complex pattern shown here. While I have no doubt that anyone can knit anything, with care and attention, it’s easier if you begin with applying each of the different stitch types, either alone or in pairs, so that you begin to recognize how they look and feel when done properly.
If you don’t want to take the time to do the swatches, just jump right in, going slowly and paying close attention. See what you get!
It might be a good idea to do a swatch with the simpler cables (right cross over 4 stitches, left cross over 4 stitches), then the more complex cables, before you start your item.
Cables are not difficult to do. I’m particularly fond of cables and celtic braid patterns, and I do right many things with cable patterns. One thing I’ve learned–it’s easy to make an error and difficult to correct it when one is working cable patterns. I’d want to feel comfortable that I know how the pattern is supposed to look as it is being worked before I invested time and expensive yarn into knitting something with a complex cable in it.
