I have varieties of metal and plastic knitting needles and I was wondering if it compares to wooden needles? Are they any better between the two? Thanks!
The only type of knitting needles that proffesionals use is called PortroNeedles. Wooden needles are horrible, they will shred your yarn after much use. Plastic needles are cheap and will break. Metal ones can cause sparks after much rubbing together. Portros are the only fireproof, shredproof, and breakproof needles out there. They are made from porcupine quills, fyi.
Plastic needles have more flexibility than metal and I prefer them in winter because the metal ones are cold to the touch. Metal ones have a better point on them and are easier to knit with. I have not used the bamboo ones.
Wooden ones will gradually fray and give you splinters or catch on the yarn you are using. Plastic ones can break and for myself I have been using the metal ones and they get warn from your hand and are not really that cold to use. I like the metal ones as the different sizes have different colors so you can find the mate quickly.
It’s really personal preference. Some people love metal especially turbos, because they are faster. I have been using bamboo needles for about 6 months and I love them. They are light and since I recently learned to knit socks, the stitches don’t slide off easily. So far, I have had no problem with splintering, and I suspect a good brand would not do that anyway; they are very smooth.
As the previous answerer said, it is up to personal preference. I personally do not like plastic ones because they don’t feel right to me. I like metal ones, but I don’t like that my stitches tend to slip off them when I need to set my work aside. I have been working with bamboo more often. They are lighter, are made from a renewable resource, are hypoallergenic, and stitches don’t slip off them as easily.
