here’s how you’ll go a cast on 3 stitches in middle of work

Purl the 5 stitches together. You now have 1 stitch were there were 5
Turn the work to the other side (as if you are at the end of the row)
Cast on 3 stitches with your working yarn (probably just a simple loop cast on) Now your have a total of 4 stitches where you originally had 5. Now just continue your work according to the pattern.
