Hi, I’m knitting an afghan on a 5mm circular needle. Online i can’t find anywhere how many stitches i can cast on. the needles is 29 in long. I am also just knitting, no purling, just the knit stitch. i want the blanket to be at least 48 inches to 54 inches wide. can someone please help me with the amount of stitches to cast on? thanks
I also knit kind of tightly too, if that matters

a lot
I would recomend to jsut cast on the amount of stitches it takes to get the width you require. I know one that is 40×48 inches that you cast on 165 stitches. i hope that helped.
to determine how many stitches you need to cast on you will need to knit a test swatch to determine how many stitches and how many rows to 10cms – and the measurements of the afghan you want to make. From this info I can determine how many stitches and how many rows you will need to complete the afghan. If you need any more info will be glad to help – just contact me through my profile.
Wow. It depends on how large you want your afghan to be, whether you are planning on knitting it in one piece, or in several squares or strips that you will later seam together, etc.
For starters though, please consider changing to larger needles (like size 11 or 13) and a bulky weight yarn. Your project will go a LOT quicker and you’re more likely to finish it as opposed to getting bored and stuffing it in the closet.
Anyway, once you have decided on the yarn and needles you’re going to use, you’ll need to knit a “swatch” (just knit in the pattern you’re going to use for your afghan, and use the stitch, yarn, and needles you’re going to use in your afghan) about 4 inches by 4 inches square. Then, measure how many stitches per inch you get (left to right). Say you get 3 stitches per inch, and you want to make your afghan 45 inches wide. That means you’ll cast on 135 stitches. Then you knit until it’s as long as you want and bind off.
I hope this helps. Feel free to e-mail me if you want/need more information.
I agree with the two people above
1. Use larger needles than 5mm. It will take so long to finish it otherwise.
2. knit a swatch. Cast on about 24 stitches and knit about 10 rows. Then, measure it. Take it apart and then do the math to figure out how many to cast on.
Good luck!
Look on the paper sleeve around your yarn and it will tell you how many stitches you need to cast on. Every yarn has a different gauge. Or better, knit 10 stitches for about an inch long and messure the width of your swatch. If the 10 stiches messure 2 inches than you have to cast on 240 stiches for 48 inches etc.
first off if you really want the blanket to come out to that size you need to know what your guage is.
in garter stitch (knitting every row) cast on 18 stitches and work for 24 rows to get a square that measures 4″ square. once you get that divide your stitches by 4 and youll get your stitches per inch. then take your rows and divide that by 4 and youll get your rows per inch.
after that take your stitches per inch times 51 and youll get how many stitches you need to cast on. then work in garter stitch (knit every row) to the length you want.
hope this helps
