Long as in a bit longer then average.
It’s one of these yarns: http://www.craftshopsupply.co.uk/products/sirdar-escape-wool-rich-dk/395/
Each 50g ball is 110m which sounds like loooads although I’m sure it’s used up quickly…
Sorry if this is a bit of stupid question but I’ve only knitted a scarf once and that was from a kit.

If you do 8feet vs the typical 6feet, then at 120 yards a ball:
go with 4 balls. Then it should be almost exactly 8ft long.
Not a stupid question at all, it is hard to know how much yarn you need. One way is to look at patterns that use a similar weight of yarn and see how much yarn they specify, and how long that scarf is supposed to come out. Then if you want your 25% longer get 25% more yarn. The long way is to knit a known amount of yarn using the needles you will use, and see how big the test piece is. That will enable you to figure out how much you need.
It really depends if you want a thin scarf or a nice thick scarf. If you’re buying your yarn at a yarn store, you might be able to return unused skeins, or perhaps ask if they will set aside six balls of the yarn you want while you just buy one at a time as you use it. If you want your scarf to be a solid color, be sure to match the dye lots as well as the color number for each skein; you’d be surprised how much variation there can be from one dye lot to the next, even in white!
