what would you like to knit? For a scarf I would put on between 20and 25.Cast that on then look and see if you want it wider or narrower (dont stretch the stitches too much across your needles ).Hope I’ve helped you.
You need to know
1: How many stitches to the inch you get with your yarn. This called gauge or tension.
2: How wide you want your piece of knitting to be.
To find your tension cast on about 20 stitches and knit to about 3 inches long. Measure how many stitches there are in a piece 1 inch wide. Say you get 6 stitches per inch.
Now measure how wide you want to knit. Say you want to knit something 9 inches wide.
Multiply 6 X 9 = 54 You will cast on 54 stitches.
If you’re adding ribs to whatever you’re knitting you need to create about double the width that you want because ribs pull it in tighter.
It depends upon what you are trying to knit. Also, if it is “normal sized yarn” such as worsted weight or #4, you will get a lacy effect so the piece will spread out a lot when it is off the needles. You might want to look for some patterns of things of the type you want to knit – scarf, blanket, sweater – and see what they recommend for the size you want to make.
