After using part of a skein of yarn, is there anyway of telling about how many ounces are still left in the skein?

i heard you can weigh it on a kitchen scale.
Being more interested in yardage than ounces, I use a gadget I got in the fishing-equipment department that measures the footage of line or yarn passing through it. Feet divided by 3 equals yardage. I do rewind leftover yarn to prevent tangling and to store it more neatly.
If you are unable to weigh the skein at home take it to a post office and ask them if they would do you a favor and check it for you. I really do not think they would charge you for doing it.
