i’m knitting a scarf for my boyfriend, and i was wondering, how long should a scarf be? (i was thinking maybe five feet, but i’m not sure)
also: the pattern i’m using is knit 3 purl 3, so it’s ribbed….he claims its fine, but i’m worried: too girly?

i have found it just depends on the guy.
i have knitted for guys who like their scarves to be pretty thick and not to long.
and some friends who want the scarf long enough to wrap around several times and only be about 4 or 5 inches wide.
but for me.. 5 feet has seemed an odd length. i usually go with 6 feet.
but i like to wrap it around once. and still have the ends go to about belt length…..
i dont think the ribbing matters as much as the yarn your using.
if its a small. weight yarn [sport] then is will look more girly. but if your using a chunky weight wool or something similar. it usually looks pretty gender nuetral. or sometimes even masculine.
men seem to like the scarf to look very simple, have the scarf as long as your bf is tall and make sure that the yarn that you use isnt fluffly, a plain yarn like red heart super saver yarn is perfect and make the scarf in his favorite color or stipe it in his favorite colors.
as for the pattern how about a simple knit 1 purl 1 rib, or garter stitch. if you make the scarf in garter with stripes, change colors on the right side of the work.
I’ve knitted a scarf or two for men in my life. In my opinion, the minimum length is 60″ (5′). This is okay for a person of shorter height. I prefer 72″-78″ for a man’s scarf. Remember they are just like you. They will wrap it around on a cold windy day and want enough ‘tail’ to secure the scarf in place. Fringe helps with length.
The ribbed pattern you are using is good for a man’s scarf. Too girly would be a lace pattern. My scarf pattern concern is if it rolls rather than lay flat. Other good patterns for men are patterns called filler stitches. They are all variations of the knit and purl stitch and make lovely flat fabric. Filler stitches are commonly used in aran cable knitting and work beautifully with cables. Some names are Interrupted Rib, Waffle Stitch, Rice Stitch, Basketweave, etc. Patterns are easy to find on the net and in basic instruction books. Hope this helps you.
