If you are supposed to do knit and purl on one side it is setting up a pattern for you. You have to count how many knits and then how many purls. If it is causing you too much trouble just go ahead and knit one row, turn, and purl the next. e-mail me if this isn’t helping and give me more information so I can figure out something you can do.
I think what you’re looking for is the stockinette stitch. Basically, you just knit one row and purl the other. That way it looks totally knit on one side, totally purl on the other! Keep in mind though, that stockinette does have a tendency to curl up!
knit one purl two. that means your first row u knit then the other side u purl then go back to knit then back to purl.
It doesn’t mean that you are doing anything wrong.
When you are knitting a knit stitch it forms a knit from the front and a purl from the reverse side. If you are continually doing a knit stitch along every row, this is garter stitch and it will give the appearance of a knit row and a purl row.

The answer above regarding stockinette stitch is correct – if you want your knitting to appear to have only knit stitches from the front, then you either have to knit a row, then purl the next row or instead, knit in the round, making a tubular knit.

You will have the problem of the sides curling. If you know how to purl, try doing the first 3 stitches and last 3 stitches in purl on the front side each row and that will give a garter stitch pattern up the sides and stop your work from curling.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
