I recently bought BabyLegs (www.babylegs.net) for my daughter. I was astonished to find out they were originally homemade. How on earth do you make something like this? The knit is SO small it looks like it would take a year, and the designs are intricate. How do you make something like that at home?! (Without buying socks and sewing, I mean.)

Very fine weight yarn knitted on double point needles. The knitter probably used size 1 or 2 regular double point needles or size 0 or00 steel needles(the steel needles are smaller and often use by lace knitters.)
The principle of knitting in the round is pretty basic – it just takes some practice getting used to double pointed needles.
Using fine weight yarns also are a matter of practice.
http://www.Lionbrand.com has all the supplies necessary. They even have free beginner how to knit and crochet tutorials.
A leg warmer is just a tube so you don’t really need shaping or a pattern.. knit a swatch to get your guage, and then do the math to figure out many stitches you will need to create the necessary inches of circumference.
Serious production knitters will also use home knitting machines, but a knitting machine is not necessary to create the leg warmers.
if you knit it you can measure the baby’s leg and then knit a gauge swatch to figure out how many stitches per inch you have. You don’t have to knit it as small, unless you want to.
On the other hand, my daughter simply bought knee socks and cut off the foot. Voila! babylegs with a curly hem. You could sew some elastic in the cut edge if you wantl. Lots less expensive and a bit quicker than knitting your own.
For baby leggings, there are many patterns available on the web, but I prefer Elizabeth Zimmermann’s baby leggings in . “Knitter’s Almanac”. They are a basic recipe and knit up fairly quickly.
Actually they work up quickly. And the new Mommy is always delighted because it may be a little item but it does add to the wardrobe. I make them when I’m just doing hats and booties, something quick. The leg warmers make everyone smile.
Use a baby weight yarn, like you will for a hat. I’m using an old Patons book called
Fairytale. Size 3 (US) double pointed needles. Work in the round. Cast On 33 sts.
and work for 3/4 inch. Change to size 6 double pointed and work 4 inches. Change
back to the Size 3 needles work 1 1/4 inches. Cast off.
What’s fun is you can work the main color and add a little stripe of the contrast color, before you change the needle size. If you’re working with a baby a little bigger cast on
37 stitches. (6 1/2 inches) It’s nice to gift these with tights. Slide your leg warmers over the tights and arrange with the
hats, booties and mitts in a pretty box.
I guess maybe using a pattern for knit /crochet socks starting at the top cuff making it from knee or just above to length you need and following pattern to beginning of instep and finish off at that point. I’m just learning to knit and that is what I would do. Just my 2 cents worth. Have a greta day.
