When you move the yarn from front to back are you going between the needles or over them? You need to knit one stitch, move the yarn to the front BETWEEN your needles, purl one stitch, move the yarn to the back, between the needles, knit again, and so on. If you have been wrapping your yarn over the needles all the time you are creating new stitches all the time, and it will be a bit of a mess. No matter, you can just unravel it and start again. Maybe you can find some videos online that will show hou how to do this.
