I’m making an ipod hoodie, and I don’t understand what to do with the sleeve stitches. It says to put them on spare yarn, but what does that mean? And do I knit the rest of the hoodie together and leave the sleeve out and then later sew it on the body?

Place the 74 (78, 82, 86, 90, 94, 98, 102, 106) sleeve stitches onto the knitting needle. They will be worked flat and seamed later. …

I just put a length of yarn (a completely different colour than your sweater so you can see it easily is best, and I like cotton or microfiber so it’s slippery and doesn’t catch on your stitches) on a big needle and run it along the knitting needle through the stitches.
The object of the game is to hold those stitches while you go knit the rest of the sweater, so you’re just replacing the needle(s) with the waste yarn for the time being.
Once all the stitches are on the waste/spare yarn, take the needle(s) out of the sleeve. I tie the ends of my waste yarn together to form a loop through the stitches, just to keep a stupid accident from happening (like accidentally stepping on one end of the waste yarn, pulling it halfway out and dropping sleeve stitches).
And, yes, you then go knit the rest of the hoodie and when you get to the sleeve instructions, you’ll go back, replace the waste yarn with the needle(s) and proceed with the directions.
