You should cast off in pattern, knit, knit, purl, purl, but so that it matches, it should be knit, purl, purl, knit, knit so the cast off stitch lines up with the stitch below it. If the tension on it doesn’t match the rest of the scarf, that will probably be straightened out when you wash it and stretch it a bit, the knitting has to relax and the stitches have to even out. That said, often times we cast on much tighter than the knitting we end up with. It’s a practice makes perfect thing for a while. If it really looks nasty, cast off with a needle two sizes smaller than you knit with.
When I cast off a scarf (which does not need to stretch at the cast off edge) I use a much smaller needle, maybe even two sizes, to bring the end in closer to the size of the rest of the knitting. If I am casting off a neckband of a jumper which needs to stretch then I use one size larger needle. Whatever you are casting off needs to be done in the pattern stitch.
