I know the basics: knit, purl, cast on, bind off. Any tips would be helpful. Thank you!

I usually use a super bulky or two strands together of worsted weight and 10mm needles. I think that’s a US size 15. Then I cast on about 80 stitches. I knit every row (garter stitch, they call that) until it is a bit longer than it is wide. Then I cast off. Wheee. Done.
Another fun pattern I’ve come up with lately is for a baby bunting, also using the super bulky or two strands and the 10mm needles. You only cast on about 75 stitches for this one. Knit until it is about 26″ long. Cast off. Fold both sides in (so it is still 26″ long, but only half its width) so they touch in the middle. Sew across the bottom and then sew the center seam about 2/3 the way up. This leaves some bunting loose at the top so you can fold it over the baby’s head or leave it open. If you’re not familiar with a bunting, you just slide the baby in. It’s kind of like an instant blanket she can’t kick off. Because it’s knit on 10mm needles, there’s no suffocation risk if the baby scooches down inside the bunting, either.
Pound of Love yarn comes with a knit or crochet hooded baby blanket on the inside of the yarn wrapper.. You only need 1 skein of the yarn to finish the blanket and you’ll have enough left over for some booties. It’s first project I ever made in crochet and was pretty easy. Also didn’t take me so long I got bored.
Lionbrand yarn makes Pound of love: http://www.lionbrand.com/yarns/pound.htm
and the offer the pattern free as well: http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/kpl-bafg.html?noImages=0
There’s a crochet version as well, which I think is prettier than the knit. It’s a shell pattern which is very easy to do.
