A headband is a great beginning project. It is the same as a scarf, only much smaller for quicker results. You can use any scarf pattern you like, as long as you size it down proportionally. You can even use stockinette, which has awful results on a scarf. It would look nice on a headband though.
A basic headband could go something like this. Cast on to desired width. Garter stitch until you can wrap around your head. Bind off and sew ends together. You can also make it longer and tie it on. The tying method will last longer as garter stitch has the tendency to stretch out.
It should be quick and easy. Have fun.
There are a ton of free patterns on Ravelry.com. It’s still in beta testing, so you’ll have to wait a couple days before you can register, but it’s totally worth it. There’s a great community that can help you with patterns and problems, and there’s a searchable inventory of patterns, free and ones you have to pay for, and each pattern is rated and has a difficulty rating.
This one looks pretty easy:

This is a pattern that many people have done:

If you have any questions about knitting terms in the patterns, you can go to knittinghelp.com–it has videos to show you how to do the techniques.
I just typed free knitted headband pattern into my search engine and found over 50 patterns. You should have no problem finding one that will be the style you like and easy to make.
Ravelry is a great site, but you need go there to ask to join and it takes up to 3 weeks to get an invitation back before you can join there.
