My boyfriend’s birthday is coming up and he was telling me how he needs a new beanie. I was wanting to knit one for him. I have never knitted before, but I found some videos on the internet and I think I could learn. I was wondering if anyone knew of any good sites or patterns to knit a beanie. Also, if the patterns could be rather easy, that would be awesome! Thanks!

Hello! To knit a beanie hat, I usually use a circular knitting needle. Cast on 68 stitches. Follow by knitting 2, then purl 2 stitches and when to the end of the first row, do not turn. Continue on and connect the first row. After this, you will be knitting a round tube shape until you have measured 10 inches in length. Next, you will knit two together (which will be decreasing) then purl one stitch. The next row, knit. The next row, knit two together all the way around. Then you will pull each stitch off the needle and pull top closed. (I usually slip a few rounds of the yarn before tying it off). You have then made your first beanie………….enjoy
I recently started to knit and crochet after being away from it for years. Lion Brand Yarns has a wonderful web site full of free patterns to download.
Here is the link to their beanie patterns: http://cache.lionbrand.com/cgi-bin/patternFinder.fcgi?search=Search&searchText=beanie+hat
I agree with the person who said go to Lion.
However, here’s the thing.
You have never knitted. 10 months ago, neither had I. I had to teach myself everything, and quite honestly, it took about 2 or 3 months of knitting to feel comfortable enough to work in tubes, like hats and some scarves.
I would go with working UP to it, not planning on starting with it. Maybe go with a scarf for him at first, then when you are comfortable, with knitting, go with “knitting in the round”.
Maybe don’t plan on doing it this year. Maybe plan on doing it NEXT year, out of a nice wool yarn. For now, not knowing how to knit, I would say learn the basics first, mostly by making scarfs for either friends and family or charity, then move up from there.
If you are just starting out in knitting. Start with something flat like a simple scarf. Once you get the hang of the needles that is. And there are really easy to follow hat patterns that don’t require circulr needles or DPNs(double point needles). I tought myself to knit last fall and I made 7 scarves,2 hats,4 headband ear warmers, and a pair of thumbless mittens.
http://www.knittinghelp.com is where I started.
A really good pattern is at: http://www.mielkesfarm.com/bsic_hat.htm
I’ve made it many, many times and it’s a great, self-explanatory pattern. *If* you get stuck, try: http://www.knittinghelp.com
You’ll need to have a basic idea of his head circumference (most adult heads are 20″-22″…check out a site like: http://www.yarnstandards.com for more on sizing).
I agree with both the people who said that you should practice on something flat before you try a project. I’ve been knitting since I was about 10 or 11, and it took a while. Once you feel comfortable, try looking at http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com. There are tons of beanie patterns there. I have personally made some of them.
Something else to consider is going to one of your local craft stores and looking into one of those circle knitting things. They are round with pegs and you can knit circular things without having to use knitting needles. It’s LOTS easier. I don’t recommend it in the long term because you can do so much more with needles, but it might get you through to his birthday.
Good luck!
