I just started knitting a few weeks ago, and I think I’m ready to start my first project. I’ve got the hang of the knit stitch, but I’m a little shaky on my purl.
I’m looking for something in the way of arm warmers or a hat. Anything else is fine though.
Also, I’m having a little trouble reading patterns. All the abbreviations confuse me, so if you could explain the abbreviations used I’d be really grateful.
Thank you!

Google knitted minnesota winter hat. This is the simplest knit hat I know of. It is knit flat and then seamed up. The only way to become comfortable with purling is to practice it. Abbreviations tog means together. Knit two stitches as if they were one or purl two together as if they were one. Good Luck Judith

The very first thing my new beginners learn when starting knitting is a hat. Knit in the round, with either circular or double point needles. I usually do the roll brim hat — knit only, and then K2tog for decreases. Simplest possible pattern and you get something that looks good. Very easy to do with hundreds of possibilities to customize.
The second thing they do is mittens where they learn the purl stitch and increases… Then a sock. After that, they can do anything, because all the basics have been covered.
