ok here goes …
when you knit you insert the needle from the bottom to the top through the previous stitch
when you purl you insert the needle from to top to the bottom through the previous stitch
that’s the main difference, the rest is just to wrap the yarn and pull through
Do you have instructions for the scarf? Here’s a pattern that looks as though it would work–you need to know how to cast on, knit, do yarn-overs (YO), and bind off, and you have those skills. http://mnsfibers.livejournal.com/49044.html
Basically, you cast on 11 stitches and knit 3 rows. On the fourth row, you knit a stitch and wrap the yarn around the working needle 3 times. Then you knit another stitch and wrap the yarn around the working needle 3 times. You do the same thing across the row: Knit a stitch and wrap the yarn around the working needle 3 times, ending knit 1. On the fifth row, you knit the stitch from the previous row and drop the YOs. Go across the row, dropping the YOs and knitting the stitches. The sixth and seventh rows are knit. The eighth row is just like the fourth row.
Not everyone learns in the same way. You might want to look for a knitting group or club where you can get help when you need it from someone who thinks the same way you do. I usually recommend the videos at http://www.knittinghelp.com for beginners because they are well done and show one thing at a time, and they show either Continental method or English/American method, whichever you want. If they don’t work for you, there are several series on YouTube that might be down your alley. The Knit Witch http://www.youtube.com/user/theknitwitch is pretty good and has a number of videos up. You can also find a number of videos on basic knitting on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AN4r8B6C9E0 Good luck with finding the help you need!
