I’m teaching myself to knit. I’ve learned casting on, the knit stitch, and the purl stitch. I’m now practicing, but I’m wanting to start beginner’s projects. and when I see something like “Pattern Row: K1, K2 together, K6, WF K1, WF K6, K2 together twice, K6, WF K1, WF K6, K2 together, K1)” I get lost. lol. can anyone interpret?
Also, does anyone know good sites to get patterns?

I taught myself to knit about 2 years ago. I love it. Check out this website……www.lionbrand.com and this will help you with instructions and they have some great patterns for you. Especially for beginners. They have some really cute blankets and scarfes. Also, check out this link of knitting abbrevations. This should help you with the pattern you are working on. Good luck and have fun knitting.
k means knit, so k1 means knit one stich, k6 means knit 6 stitches. k2 together means to knit 2 stitches together.
I go to about.com to find free crochet patterns they also have free knitting as well.
it has step by step instruction all you have to do is type in the stitch.
Freepatterns.com
also has free patterns in a lot of categories and has resource help.
I taught myself to knit last year. One of the best knitting resources out there is http://knittinghelp.com
The website explains different abbreviations and also has how-to videos for different stitches, as well as binding off and casting on. It can be really helpful to see a video of something rather than just to read instructions and looks at pictures.
Also, http://www.knitty.com is a great website for patterns for all levels of difficulty and in-depth information about knitting. It’s one of my favorite sites by far.
Also for patterns:

Good luck and have fun!
kokuotaku has given you some excellent sites–I have been knitting over 50 years, and these are the sites I go to. For beginning knitters I always recommend dishcloths. They are useful and mistakes are not a big issue. They are great to practice, and cotton yarn is relatively inexpensive. I am including my favorite dishcloth sites.

has all the intricate patterns with different designs, and

mostly uses just knit and purl, but gives you TONS of patterns, including all 50 states.
You can also check out the show ‘Knitty Gritty’ on DIY. If you don’t get that channel, their website has patterns.

Enjoy yourself! Knitting is my favorite vice.
You have some great answers here. For some creative inspiration, check out http://www.craftster.org. People post all kinds of crafts there, and they generally include tutorials. When a pattern starts with something like “Pattern Row,” that is the general pattern that you will follow through most of your rows. Don’t sweat if the pattern looks confusing on paper. Since you have to make a swatch first, just follow the directions as best you can, “word for word.” Usually, they become less confusing when your needles are moving along.
Also, I found the book STITCH ‘N B**** helpful in explaining what I needed to know. It’s straightforward, and the patterns are pretty funky. Good luck!
