I’m not sure what you want a pattern for crochet or knitting as you have mentioned both. If you want something different make a scarf using the ripple stitch.
Crochet Pattern Central is a wonderful site.
I love crochet and I am the last person in the world to need a pattern, I make my own and have done so for years along with all the stitches crochet has to offer.
Now that I have done all this with all the crochet hooks, I wish I had computer skills and could be of help to others.
Here is a video tutorial crochet site.http://www.youtube.com/tjw1963

The Shells and V’s Scarf (listed at the link above) is very easy and has extra photos showing close looks at the rows and at the crochet stitches used.

These two websights should do the trick. They have loads of info on the two plus tones of free patterns. I am a crocheter and this is my favorite place on the web for free patterns. they collect patterns from all across the web for you so you don’t have to go from sight to sight searching.

These are some of my favorite sites to go to for patterns:http://www.crochetpatterncentral.comhttp://www.lionbrand.comhttp://www.coatsandclark.comhttp://crochet.about.comhttp://www.caron.com/free.htmlhttp://www.bernat.com/pattern.php?PHPSES…
Registration is required for Bernat and Lion Brand, but the other ones shouldn’t require that.

Actually, an easy pattern for a scarf is to make it with double crochets:
Make chains the width you want your scarf to be. Add 2 more chains. These extra two chains are going to count as your FIRST double crochet now and throughout the whole pattern. Then….
Row 1: Counting from your hook, make a double crochet in the 3rd chain, and in each chain until the end of your row. Chain 2 and turn your work.
Turning your work means you will turn it clockwise 180 degrees.
Row 2: Make a double crochet in each stitch. At the end, again make a Chain 2 and turn your work.
Remember, your Chain 2 that you have dangling there counts AS YOUR FIRST STITCH so don’t make any double crochets in there or your work will start to get wider and wider.
When you get to the length you like, cut your yarn (about 5 to 6inches long) and gently pull through your loop. Afterwards, with a yarn needle, just weave through the first row (but not on the top of the stitches), about 3 inches, and then weave back. Pull the yarn a little bit and cut carefully, then stretch your scarf just a bit, so that the end will stay hidden.
Get some yarn that you like, so that you can make a nifty scarf… you don’t really need a complicated pattern. Some of the nicest scarves are those that have interesting colors or textures from the yarn.
Here’s a link for you. I’ve been crocheting since the 60′s and find it very relaxing.http://72.14.205.104/search?q=cache:eUMT…
