I have made two pairs of legwarmers, out of pattern books on size 8 length 16 circular needles

The easiest way to make legwarmers is to knit two rectangles and sew them into tubes.
You’ll need to learn how to cast on, the knit stitch, the purl stitch, binding off, seaming, and weaving in ends. There are free online videos to teach you all of these at
