I need to knit a scarf for my best friend for Christmas and I need a pattern. I am broke and only have one full skien of useable yarn. I would like to try something besides garter stitch, I use it all the time. I want to do something unique and fun, just like my best friend. And the scarf needs to be something that I can do very quickly – I only have three weeks at the most. Thank you.

Check out lionbrand.com to see what they have in their library of free patterns. With a large set of needles you should be able to whip up something very quickly, however, in my exprerience, chunky yarn does best with a simple garter stitch. You could do a mobius scarf,

row 1 knit five, purl five, knit five purl five, knit five
row 2, purl 5, knit five, purl 5, knit 5, purl 5
do this for 6 rows
next row, purl 5, knit 5, purl 5, knit 5, purl 5
next row, knit 5, purl 5, knit 5, purl 5, knit 5
Do this for 6 rows
you now have a nice basketweave scarf started. repeat these rows until you run out of yarn. looks good, just as fast as the garter stitch, and if you do not know how to purl, go to knittinghelp.com for instruction.
Here is a link for free patterns.
Weigh your skein or measure it. Knit a swatch with 1/10th or 1/20th of total yarn … dont’ break off the yarn. Get out your ruler. Do the math to figure out your gage. Do the math to figure out how long it will be if you cast on whatever stitches, or to figure out how many stitches to cast on if you want the scarf to be whatever length. Write everything down. Frog the sample (undo the stitching, rip-it, rip-it, rip-it) and knit up your scarf.
With chunky yarn, I’d recommend stockinette with the first and last 3 stitches of each row knit to prevent excess roll/curl.
first row k1 p1 next row purl on knit and knit on purl..next row knit on purl and purl on knit.
