Knitting and crocheting really do look different. No one would mistake painted knit for crochet. Painting on knits isn’t really a good idea, anyway, as it comes out all scratchy and blobby.
However, if you do have a plain knitted blanket, I can tell you how to add a design. You’ll need more yarn, though not a lot, and a crochet hook. If you know how to crochet a chain stitch, you’re set. (If not, you’ll have to learn that part first.) Crochet a chain stitch through your knitted item. I have done this one several things, including my own hand-knit sweaters. It’s a fun technique, as you can write, do curves, and generally make anything you want.

I don’t understand this. Why would you want a good quality knit blanket to look like a poor quality cr***t blanket? That would be defeating yourself.
These are two very different things… you can’t “paint” something to look like cro***t. Or were you thinking of something else, and didn’t quite explain it well enough for us to understand?
