This will depend on which pattern you choose to use, use the yarn and hook recommended in the pattern.

It really depends on how quickly you want to complete it, and how thick you want it. There are many patterns out there to choose from.

If you want thick, heavy, and quick, go with a chunky weighted yarn, and a larger hook, N or P.
If you want moderate weight, loose, and quick, go with a sport-weight yarn, and a large hook, J or K.
If you want moderate weight and tighter stitch, go with a sport-weight yarn, and a medium hook, G or H.
If you want an even lighter weight, but tighter stitch, go with a light-weight yarn, and a small hook, E or F.
If you’re simply wanting to make a light-weight giant doily to lay decoratively on your bed, use crochet thread and a steel hook that produces the size stitches you’re looking for. I find a B, C, or D hook works well for larger projects like this. Shows off the stitching and pattern better. However, intricate smaller patterns can be beautiful.

If you’re using a pattern that has standard “afghan” sizing, 4′x4′ or so, then try going with a thicker yarn and/or a larger hook to make the result larger.

Remember, hooks are fairly inexpensive, and experimentation is key. Play around until you find what works best for you.
