I can’t figure out if they want me to crochet in the front loop, back loop, or under both loops? I am new to crochet and all the patterns I’ve used have specified front or back loops. Help!

If your pattern doesn’t specify then it usually means to crochet in both loops. Using the front or back loop can result in ribbing or createing more stretch in your fabric. If you’re not trying to make something stretchy then you will usually crochet in both loops.
Check your pattern notes, special stitch directions, and any term glossary that it may have. If none of those tell you to work in one loop or the other, then try using both. If your item starts looking correct then you know you’re on the right track.
Generally, unless a pattern states otherwise, you will put your hook under both the top loops.

I have been crocheting for over 50 years and for this instruction I always use the top loop only. I have found that most patterns will specify if they want you to use both loops. Crochet items are meant to be flexible and this will give your item flexibility. I am not sure what you mean by front or back loop. Maybe crochet instructions have changed in the last few years. I have not bought anything new in years. I make most things without a pattern.

It must be through both loops then. I had the same problem too when I was just learning.
