I was watching a lady crochet in the hospital where I work. She was just jabbering along and going really fast at crocheting this afghan. She had the end of it stuffed into a basket and seemed to make it look so easy. I decided I want to learn how to do this to pass the time while I am at home. Can you give me any insight or helpful hints on this interesting hobby? I would like to learn to do it and become proficient at it. I am 42 yrs old. Am i just wasting my time?

My mom taught me how to crochet, it is very easy once you get the basics down. The hardest part for me is reading the patterns…. I have to have someone actually show me how to do it, then it is no problem. If I was just starting out I would ask someone I know to show me the basics.

I borrowed a DVD and a Knitting/Crocheting for Dummies book from the Library and taught myself. How quickly you get it, it depending on how fast a learner you are how hand-eye coordinated you are. You pretty much just have to practice like anything else.
No, of course you can learn. My grandmother taught me when I was about 8. You can check at your local craft store (joAnn Fabrics, Michaels, AC Moore) for beginner classes at a reasonable fee. You could also try your local yellow pages for yarn shops and ask if they hold classes or if someone would help you learn. It is worth it, it is relaxing and inexpensive and you can donate your first project (make a baby blanket) to a woman’s shelter.
My great grandmother taught me to crochet when I was about six. I love it and crochet all the time. There are books at crafts stores called “I taught myself to crochet” that are really good. They come with crochet needles also. They have very clear instructions with pictures.
I learned from my mother without her even realizing. I’m left handed and she was right, so I would sit in front of her and watch everything she was doing. I was 10 years old so my work was still a little sloppy. I don’t remember how long before I got “good” at it, but I would think as an adult it would take no more than a month or two for you to pick it up. Go for it. It’s such a stress reliever. People love to get my handmade afghans as gifts. There are also several really good charities that will accept whole blankets or a few small squares that can be sewn together with other donated squares to make an afghan.

All you need to do is practice to get your stitches even. The easiest way is to find a site on the Internet that has stitch instructions. Start with a simple stitch, have a hook and some yarn and work at it. When you have it mastered tear it out and try another stitch. I know you can do it. The hardest thing for me was switching the directions around because I’m left-handed. But I did it, now enjoy it very much What I like is I can make something fast like a potholder or something challenging like an afghan with a new and complicated pattern.
