I want to make a blanket. I know how to crochet except it always comes out in an oval shape. Can you give me a website to teach me how to crochet a blanket.

They have pictures of free patterns, let you know which are hard to do and which are easy. I would suggest starting with scarves. You can make all different kinds as practice (keeping the shape perfectly rectangle) and you have Christmas gifts for everyone!
My favorite crochet website is Crochet Pattern Central. All the patterns are free and the tutorials are very good.
I also love Crochetville. If you’re not already a member, you should check it out. It’s a free online community with tons of great resources. My user name is ShellySXE. Look me up if you log on!
If you have any interest in a book, check your library for The Reader’s Digest Crochet Technique book and Stitch n’ Bitch The Happy Hooker. Both are excellent. SnB Happy Hooker has great instructions and really modern, updated patterns.
I have made several king-sized afghan/blankets – either using a pattern I like [doubling the measurements and stitches needed] OR I start with a simple pattern / design that I have used before and do some figuring to get the size I want.
If you can get your hands on a Japanese crochet book (LOL, good luck) they really make crocheting so much easier. Instead of reading the printed directions (which always screws me up) they have diagrams or drawings that show each stitch, what type of stitch it is, and you can count how many you need to do. You don’t even have to read anything to be able to do it; it’s all just by looking at the diagram. I’m a visual person so things are easier if I can SEE how to do it. Wish they had that method here in the states. You could try to Google “Japanese Crochet Books).
Make sure that you are not skipping the last stitch of every row. A lot of afghans start off with a certain amount of chains, depending on how wide you want it to be. The trick is when you get to the end of a row to not skip the last stitch and when you turn at the beginning of your next row you don’t add a stitch.
There is a CD called “Crochet Made Easy” it’s on eBay but I’m sure you can get it other places too.
