I’m just learning to crochet. I can do the beginning chain fine, but when I go on to the second row, it goes all messy and lumpy and tight and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong! Please can someone help me?
You might want to start with finger crochet. what you do is you get a long piece of yarn and you make a knot .the knot should be a loop. then what you do is you take the hole in your finger and the longer part of the string you putin the whole and pull though. you keep doing that until you want to.
Are you saying that the *chain* goes messy and lumpy and tight when you work stitches into it? If so, (1) ease up on the tension on the yarn when you make the beginning chain or (2) use a hook two sizes larger than your working hook to make the beginning chain. The chain must be loose enough to work your stitches into without pulling out of shape.
The two above me have a great idea about the videos but it sounds like your main problem is your tension so pay perticular attention to videos that demonstrate that. I have been crocheting for 24 years and the way I keep my tension is I wrap my yarn over my pinky, under the two fingers and over my pointer finger. This will help you keep your stitches consistant.

Hi, Maybe your stitches are to tight. You might try going up 1 or 2 hook sizes just for the chain. Good Luck!Susan

ok, so loosely chain about ten stitches. They should be easy to slide the hook through, but not to tight or loose.
next, put your needle in the second stitch and wrap the yarn around
pull the middle loop over the top one
wrap yarn around
Pull last two loops over.
continue doing this at a consistent tension. usually when you start, it looks kind of funny but at the end of the second row it looks more normal.

Here’s a link to youtube that has many videos on beginning crochet. One of them should be able to help you. Sometimes seeing the answer to your question in video form is easier to learn from.
