knitting battles/war?

Question by k_lamore: knitting battles/war?
Today I was knitting with my local group, and one of the ladies was talking about this knitting/crochet “battle” thats similair to Sock Wars only instead of socks you knit or crochet hats. She mentioned the name but I forgot it already. I would really love to participate in one these and since I have never made any socks I thought doing the hats would alot of fun, or anything else. So if anyone knows of anything – hats, scarves, whatever I’d love to know. Thanks in advance. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/knittypals
I’m not looking for patterns, I design my own. What I want to do is participate in one of these knitting battles I have been hearing about. What happens is your assigned to a knitter, you get their information, knit up whatever the project may be, mail it to them and they recieve the package they are dead, at the same time someone else has been assigned to assassinate you. I already know how to find Sock Wars, but I have not knit any socks yet so I wanted to find one where they are making something else like hats or something.

Looking for help with crocheting a basic baby blanket?

Question by T.J.: Looking for help with crocheting a basic baby blanket?

http://www.bernat.com/pattern.php?PID=4017

This is the pattern I’m using to crotchet a basic blanket. I’ve crocheted a handful of times, but it’s been a while. I’m confused with something in the 2nd row: “Chain 4. Miss next (half double crochet, chain 2, half double crochet).”

Miss next what? If I miss the next half double crochet only to chain twice more, aren’t I essentially just chaining six in a row? How do you skip an HDC when you’re just doing a chain?

If someone could clarify this for me, that would be great! Thanks a lot!
Everyone’s answers are great. Thank you! Just for clarification, I’d skip all of the next HDCs up until the chains, skip the 2 chains, one more HDC, then continue? (I know that sounds confusing lol)

I mean, it doesn’t say how many to skip in brackets. Does that imply I skip that entire section of them?

Best answer:

Answer by Miz T
Literally, miss (or skip) the next half double crochet stitch, chain 2 space, and half double crochet stitch. You will be skipping a stitch, a space, and a stitch. The chain will take you to the next point where you do an hdc stitch.

The instructions are leading you to create those “holes” that form the diamond shapes. You hdc in several hdcs, then you chain 4, skip the next hdc, the next chain space, and the next hdc, then you hdc several times and skip again. On the next row, you’ll also be making holes, and you’ll start filling in the holes from the previous row. The rows of holes you create “move” on an angle to intersect other rows of holes and create the diamonds.

does anyone have any good crocheted gift ideas?

Question by Candice B: does anyone have any good crocheted gift ideas?
my mom’s birthday is in about a week and i’m going to visit around that time. i’m broke again.. as usual.. but still wanted to give my mom something meanful for her birthday. i started crocheting back in november and made her a scarf (the first thing i ever crocheted) for christmas.

i found some really cute crochet bag patterns. but i don’t know if i should crochet something AGAIN for her birthday? she might be thinking “man, i wish she’d pick a new hobby so i could get some different gifts.”

i know you can make a bajillion crocheted things.. just wondering if anyone had some unique ideas..

now that i’ve said “crochet” about 30 times. =p

thanks a bunch.

Best answer:

Answer by BB
that depends if she liked the scarf or not. if she did, then yes, go ahead with a bag.
anyway, personally, i’d much prefer something handmade especially for me, than somehting bought in a shop. so yes, don’t worry so much, go ahead and make her the bag. if she likes crochet, you should look into tops as well for next time, there’s some really cool stuff.
bet her friends are all jealous!

crocheted afghan patterns?

Question by mcooke1936: crocheted afghan patterns?
Sometime in the early to mid 1970s I bought a “Learn to Crochet” book that featured a granny square afghan that was crocheted in one piece, each square connected to the next as they were crocheted. I have lost this booklet and I would very much like to find a copy of it, or a similar, easy-to-crochet pattern. If anyone knows where I can buy it, please let me know.

Crocheting pattern question?

Question by Be Still and know He’s God: Crocheting pattern question?
Alright. I am pretty new at crocheting. Here’s my question. Does dc mean “double crochet” or “decrease”? Here is a bit of the pattern:

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc, now and throughout), turn; 2 dc in same st, skip next sc, sc in next sc, *skip next sc, 3 dc in next sc, skip next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * across to last 2 sc, skip next sc, 3 dc in last sc: 71 sts.

So yeah, that makes not too much sense to me. If it meant decrease how would I do that. Help if you could!
Okay, so if dc means double crochet, could you please help me with row 3? I ended up with tons more stitches than I was supposed to on row 3.

Row 3: Ch 1, turn; sc in first dc, 3 dc in next sc *skip next dc, sc in next dc, 3 dc in next sc; repeat from * across to last 3 dc, skip next 3 dc, sc in last dc: 69 stitches.

I really just don’t understand how I sc in a dc loop like it asks. Is it the same as sc in an sc loop? Like I said, I did row 2 right, but row 3 had WAY too many stitches. Please help!!!

crochet translation for ladies slipper booties?

Question by Rita Bradt: crochet translation for ladies slipper booties?
HELP! I have a pattern for buttoned-Cuff boots and I’m stuck. I’ve made the sole and sides with no problem. Now I am beginning the rounds for the top portion. Rnd 1: Ch1, sc in first st, ch 1, sk next st [sc in next st, ch 1, sk next st] around, join in beg sc. (17 ch sps) EASY. Now, here’s where I’m confused: Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as first half double crochet and chain-1), [working over ch-1 on last rnd, dc in next st on rnd before last, ch1, sk next st] around, join in 2nd ch of beg ch-3. I HAVE NEVER heard of this before. I’m supposed to double crochet on the round before the last round? Is that the same as a “long crochet”? If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!!

Best answer:

Answer by Wanda J.
If it says that the chain 3 is a half double crochet plus a chain one,
then in each ch-1 space of the previous round is a half double
crochet and a ch 1, across, to join in ch 2 of the first ch-3 made.

How do you do double-string crochet?

Question by Jean: How do you do double-string crochet?
Someone told me it’s possible to do “double-string double crochet” to make a blanket in half the time, using two separate strands of yarn. Does anyone know the official name of this technique or how to do it?
Someone told me it’s possible to do “double-string double crochet” to make a blanket in half the time, using two separate strands of yarn. Does anyone know the official name of this technique or how to do it?

I don’t think she meant using 2 strands together, based on her explanation of how to do it. The gal who told me about it was just another passenger on a plane who saw me crocheting, so I can’t check with her.

I’ve never heard of this one.
Could your friend mean using yarn double with a big hook. That would make a blanket quickly.

Beginning crochet book?

Question by Annette T: Beginning crochet book?
I’m trying to decide on a book to learn how to crochet. I already taught myself to knit a while back. I prefer knitting, but, I’d like to learn how to crochet, at least to supplement my knitting skills and maybe learn a few new tricks. I taught myself to knit using Stitch N —–, so I am leaning towards ‘The Happy Hooker’ by the same author, Deb Stoller. I find the patterns in SNB a bit young for me now (ahem… I’m in my late 20s, a pregnant stay at home mom and not in need of lots of knit bikinis). I generally knit baby items, mostly because most of my friends are having babies right now, but I do enjoy creating different household and clothing items as well. The other option I’m eying is “Not Your Mama’s Crochet” but that looks to be along the same lines as Happy Hooker. Any thoughts ?

Answer by mommymanic
Most of the books give you the directions for all stitches needed to create the patterns within. I tend to look back at my crocheting for dummies book often. It will teach you all the basics plus teach you how to adapt patterns for different sizes.
Once you get the stitches down… which I’m sure you will, I find crochet easier than knitting… there are some really good pattern books called hooked on toddlers/babies or hooked for toddlers/babies
the patterns are easy and they give directions from baby sizes all the way to toddler sizes.

Adding single crochet edging to stockinette stitch afghan?

Question by rhodecol: Adding single crochet edging to stockinette stitch afghan?
I used a knitting machine to make the stockinette stitch afgan. So of course the edges and ends will curl in because of the way stockinette behaves.

My question is how many single crochet stiches will I need per row/inch if the gauge is 20 rows and 14 sts equal 4″ in St St and the gauge for my single crochet “is” 23 rows and 17 sts equal 4″ with a size H hook.

The yarn is worsed weight.

I need to get this edging done by tommorow night so I really do not have the time to just guess. If someone has a formula or something to help me, I would be grateful.

If any other info is needed, just ask. Thanks

Best answer:

Answer by ▒Яenée▒
I’m thinking if you put 2 single crochets in each stitch
3 in each corner.
If you are trying to get it flat to lay right you will probably have to do about 3 or 4 rows.
Hope that helps
